COVID-19 Frauds and Scams To Be Aware Of

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) is warning Canadians to be vigilant when trying to take precautions against COVID-19. Fraudsters want to profit from consumer’s fears, uncertainties and misinformation.

Some of the scams reported by the CAFC include:

  • Cleaning or heating companies promising to clean ducts or install air filters to protect against COVID-19
  • Power companies threatening to disconnect your power for non-payment
  • The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization offering to sell lists of those known to be infected in your area
  • The Public Health Agency of Canada indicating that you have tested positive for COVID-19 and attempting to trick you into providing your health card number and credit card number for a prescription
  • The Red Cross and other charities offering free medical products, such as masks, in return for a donation
  • Government agencies or departments asking for personal information or tricking you into opening malicious email attachments
  • Financial advisors pressuring you into investing in ‘hot new stocks’ related to COVID-19
  • Banks or Financial advisors offering loans to assist you through this crisis
  • Door-to-door salespeople offering decontamination services
  • Private companies offering fast tests for COVID-19 (only hospitals can perform tests!)
  • Private companies offering bulk buying on protective supplies that are in high demand
  • Charities requesting donations/money for victims, products and research

Scam Prevention:

  • Do NOT give out your personal information
  • Do your research to know who you are dealing with
  • Get referrals, recommendations and opinions before you act
  • Encourage discussions with family and/or friends when making large or unusual purchases or money exchanges
  • Share information and experiences with others regarding Frauds & Scams

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Iroquois, Ojibway/Chippewa, Anishinabek, the Metis, and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit River. This Territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and the Haldimand Treaty. We are grateful to live and work on this land. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
